Former O-D Bowl stars shine at NFL Scouting Combine

The 18 former O-D Bowl participants all stood out at the 2012 NFL Scouting Combine this past week with every one of them finishing as a top performer in at least one drill.

18 former O-D Bowl participants attended the 2012 NFL Scouting Combine with several of them among the top overall performers of the entire event.

Three players stood out among all combine performers in Oklahoma cornerback Jamell Fleming, Georgia Tech wide receiver Stephen Hill, and Georgia guard Cordy Glenn.

Fleming wowed scouts with his workout finishing #12th in the 40-yard dash (4.53), #2 bench press (23), 4th-best broad jump (10’5), #3 short shuttle (3.97), and No. 5 3-cone (6.71).

Hill was a workout warrior finishing first in the 40-yard dash (4.36) and broad jump (11’1). He also had the #4 vertical jump (39.5) and #10 3-cone (6.88).

Glenn had a solid workout with the 6th-best 40-yard dash (5.15) and was No. 8 on the bench with 31 reps. It is expected that he will go in the late first or early second round.

Quarterback Aaron Corp had a very solid workout and just might find himself in the draft after posting the 5th-best 40-yard dash (4.72), ninth-best vertical leap (31.5), No. 6 3-cone (7.03), #6 short shuttle (4.30), and #13 broad jump (8’10) among his position.

Texas A&M running back Cyrus Gray had an impressive 4.47 40-yard dash, good for 5th-best while he had 21 bench reps to finish 8th.

At wide receiver, Hill was not the only participant who did well as Oklahoma’s Ryan Broyles finished third with 21 bench reps and Wisconsin’s Nick Toon was 12th with 18 reps and his 37.5-inch vertical was good for 12th as well.

The offensive line reps from O-D were the most impressive as a group with two potential first-round picks in Stanford’s guard David DeCastro and Georgia’s guard Cordy Glenn.

DeCastro joined Glenn as one who helped his stock with 34 bench reps, which put him 2nd, while he was 9th in the vertical jump (29.5), first in the 3-cone (7.30), and third in the short shuttle (4.56). Heading into the combine he was considered a first-round pick and cemented that with his workout.

Others with solid workouts were Cal PA’s Rishaw Johnson who was 10th in the 40 (5.24), third in the vertical (31.5), 9th in the broad jump (9’0), and his 4.53 short shuttle was good for first. Ole Miss’ Bobbie Massie was 8th in the 40-yard dash (5.23), 11th in the broad jump (8’7), and 11th in the 3-cone (7.70).

There were four alumni on the defensive line led by Washington’s Alameda Ta’amu, Southern Cal’s duo of Christian Tupou and DaJohn Harris, and South Carolina’s Travian Robertson. Robertson finished 14th in the bench press with 30 reps while Ta’amu was fifth with 35 reps.

Texas linebacker Keenan Robinson was the lone rep in that group and had a solid workout with 27 bench reps, good for #6, the #11 vertical jump (35.5), and a 10’0 broad jump that put him 10th in the group.

Several former bowl participants were in the cornerback group with Fleming such as Brandon Boykin, Omar Bolden, and Chaz Powell. Powell finished 11th in the bench press with 17 reps, #12 3-cone (6.84), and had a 10’1 broad jump, good for #10. Bolden lead all corners with 24 reps on the bench press.

"We are proud of all 18 players and wish them the best in the NFL, "said Offense-Defense President Rick Whittier, "Their performances just go to show the caliber of athletes we have been fortunate to have in our bowl game."
